The specifics of exactly how a given drill was run are historical inference from converging sources, not a recovered lesson plan.
Trained From Childhood: The Telpochcalli and Calmecac
Aztec society ran two parallel school systems. The telpochcalli, or house of the young men, took in commoner boys around age fifteen for training in weapons handling, farm labor, and community duties. The calmecac, reserved mostly for the sons of nobles, could take boys as young as five or six for a longer education in religion, statecraft, the calendar, and eventually warfare.

The Eagle and Jaguar warriors were the Aztec military’s most visible elite societies, open to commoners and nobles alike, but only after they had proven themselves by taking captives in battle. Above them sat even more exclusive orders, the cuauhchique (“shaved ones”) and otontin (“otomies”), which Cartwright notes required no fewer than twenty acts of battlefield bravery on top of already belonging to the Eagle or Jaguar ranks.
It’s worth being precise about the goal here, since pop culture tends to flatten it into generic ancient-warrior mythology. Aztec warfare prized capturing enemy combatants alive over killing them outright, since captives were needed for religious sacrifice. That shaped the physical skill set toward grappling, subduing, and controlling an opponent at close range, not just landing the hardest possible strike.
The Ballgame as Physical Conditioning
The Mesoamerican ballgame, ōllamaliztli, was played across a wide social range, but it also carried real combat-adjacent physical demands. Per Cartwright’s separate World History Encyclopedia piece on the ballgame, players couldn’t use their hands, instead directing a solid rubber ball anywhere from 10 to 30 centimeters wide and up to 3.5 kilograms in weight using padded elbows, knees, thighs, and hips. It would be an overstatement to call the ballgame a designed warrior-conditioning program. It carried enormous religious and political weight of its own, up to and including its role in ritual and divination. But the physical skill set it demanded, explosive hip rotation, absorbing repeated high-force impacts, and quick lateral footwork, overlaps directly with what close-quarters combat would require, even if that overlap wasn’t the game’s stated purpose.
Weapon Training: Macuahuitl and Atlatl
Grip and Rotational Power
The macuahuitl was a flat wooden club edged with razor-sharp obsidian blades, built in a one-handed version roughly a meter long and a larger two-handed version nearly as tall as its wielder. Swinging either version with control, rather than just wildly, calls on the same physical quality strength coaches now call rotational power: the ability to generate and control force as it moves through the torso rather than just the arms.

Starting Young: What Youth-Development Science Says
One of the most consistent threads in the record is that Aztec physical education started early and ran for years, not months. Modern youth athletic development research supports that basic principle, even though it obviously can’t validate any specific 15th-century method.
Rhodri Lloyd and Jon Oliver’s 2012 Youth Physical Development Model, published in the Strength and Conditioning Journal, argues that physical trainability follows windows tied to a child’s stage of biological maturation, not just their age in years, and that long-term, progressively structured training across childhood produces better outcomes than cramming intensity into a short window later on. A multi-year system that introduced physical skills gradually from early childhood, as the calmecac and telpochcalli both did in different ways, lines up with that principle even though the Aztecs obviously weren’t working from modern sports science.
Applying the Underlying Principles Today (Safely)
- Train rotational power directly. Cable chops, medicine ball rotational throws, and landmine rotations build the same trunk-driven force transfer a heavy edged weapon would have demanded.
- Build grip and forearm endurance. Farmer’s carries, dead hangs, and thick-grip work target the same forearm and hand endurance repeated weapon or ballgame use would have required.
- Introduce skills early and progress gradually. For young athletes, that means age-appropriate loading and skill practice spread across years, not adult-intensity training compressed into a short program.
- Treat impact tolerance as a built skill, not a given. Padded sparring, controlled contact drills, or even a well-coached contact sport build the ability to absorb force safely, the same way ballgame players relied on padding and technique rather than raw toughness alone.
