Strip away the marketing and a handful of natural compounds actually have real, replicated research behind them, while most of what fills supplement shelves doesn’t.

What “Nootropic” Actually Means

The term was coined in the 1970s for substances that enhance memory and learning with minimal side effects and toxicity. In practice it’s used far more loosely today, covering everything from caffeine to prescription ADHD medication to herbal extracts with a single small study behind them.
