Nothing matches every filter. Try removing one.
No affiliate links: we earn nothing if you buy. Specs come from each manufacturer’s own pages, and list prices were checked on 2026-10-18 and change often. Accuracy notes summarize independent validation studies where they exist. Educational only, not medical advice.

This fitness tracker comparison lines up 18 current watches, bands, rings and chest straps and 12 smart scales by the features that matter for health, with the independent accuracy research for each. Filter by what you need, such as built-in GPS, HRV, a chest strap pairing or hand-and-foot electrodes, sort by price and compare up to three side by side. There are no affiliate links, and we earn nothing if you buy.
How we built this comparison
- Current models only. Every product was confirmed as currently sold on the manufacturer’s US site in October 2026.
- Specs from the source. Features come from each manufacturer’s own product and spec pages. Where a maker doesn’t state a spec, we leave it blank rather than guess.
- List prices. US list prices were checked on October 18, 2026. Retail prices change often, so treat them as a guide.
- Independent evidence. Each product shows up to two peer-reviewed validation studies. We say clearly when a study tested an earlier model or a different model from the same brand, and we note manufacturer funding.
Which fitness tracker is most accurate?
It depends on what you measure. Accuracy varies far more between measurements than between brands:
- Heart rate during exercise: a chest strap is still the reference. The Polar H10 detected 99.6% of heartbeat intervals correctly, even during high-intensity exercise (1). Wrist sensors are generally good: a meta-analysis of 56 studies found Apple Watch heart rate within about 10% (2), and in a test of 10 wearables against a chest ECG, the Fitbit Charge 6 was the most accurate, at about 5.5% average error (3).
- Calories burned: the weakest number on any wearable. The same Apple Watch meta-analysis found heart rate accurate but calorie estimates not (2).
- VO2 max: a reasonable ballpark, not a lab result. A Garmin Forerunner 265 stayed under 10% average error in 20 runners (4), while an Apple Watch Series 10 underestimated VO2 max by about 13% (5). Our VO2 max calculator gives another estimate without any device.
- Overnight HRV: rings and screenless bands did best in one comparison against a chest ECG over 536 nights, with Oura showing the closest agreement and WHOOP close behind; the watches tested agreed less well (6). Our guide to what a good HRV is explains how to read it.
- Sleep stages: only moderately accurate on any wrist device. Against laboratory sleep studies of six wrist trackers, even the better performers reached only moderate agreement on sleep stages (7). Total sleep time is more reliable than the stage breakdown.
Which smart scale is most accurate?
Every smart scale measures your weight well. Body fat is another matter. In the most detailed independent test, of 15 bioimpedance devices against a four-compartment lab model, a single body-fat reading from consumer scales was off by about 3.3 to 7.2 percentage points in total error (8). Two patterns stood out:
- Hand-and-foot scales did better than foot-only scales, because electrodes in both hands and feet pass current through the whole body rather than mostly the legs.
- Trends beat single readings. Errors for change over 12 to 16 weeks were much smaller, about 2 points, than for any one reading (8). Weigh in at the same time of day, under the same conditions, and watch the trend.

How to choose
| If you want to… | Look for | Filter to use |
|---|---|---|
| Train by heart rate, such as Zone 2 | Accurate heart rate, ideally a chest strap pairing | Pairs with a chest strap |
| Track sleep and recovery | Overnight HRV and sleep stages, comfortable to wear at night | HRV |
| Run or hike without a phone | Built-in GPS and long battery life | Built-in GPS, 7+ day battery |
| Avoid ongoing costs | Full features with no membership | No subscription |
| Follow body composition over time | Hand-and-foot electrodes, ideally multi-frequency | Hand-and-foot electrodes, multi-frequency |

Frequently asked questions
Which fitness tracker is most accurate?
For heart rate during exercise, a chest strap such as the Polar H10 is the most accurate. Among wrist devices, independent tests find heart rate generally within about 10 percent, while calorie estimates are much less reliable. For overnight HRV, rings and screenless bands agreed best with an ECG in one comparison.
Which smart scale is most accurate for body fat?
Hand-and-foot scales generally beat foot-only scales. In an independent test of 15 devices, single body-fat readings from consumer scales were off by roughly 3 to 7 percentage points, but changes over several months were tracked much more closely. Use any scale for trends, not single readings.
Do you earn money from these products?
No. The comparison has no affiliate links, and we earn nothing if you buy. Specs come from each manufactureru2019s own pages, and list prices were checked on October 18, 2026.
Are wearable VO2 max estimates accurate?
They are a reasonable ballpark. In recent studies, a Garmin Forerunner 265 stayed under 10 percent average error, while an Apple Watch Series 10 underestimated VO2 max by about 13 percent. A lab test is the only direct measurement.
Do I need a subscription for a fitness tracker?
Not for most watches. WHOOP requires a membership, and Oura charges a monthly fee for full features. Use the No subscription filter to see devices whose features work without one.
