Walk through a park almost anywhere in Scandinavia and you will see people striding along with what look like ski poles, even though there is no snow in sight. Nordic walking has a reputation as the gentler, less-serious cousin of running, mostly because from a distance it still just looks like walking. But a real question sits underneath that impression: does swinging a pair of poles with every step actually turn a walk into a measurably harder workout, or is it mostly gear marketing? Lab data gives a fairly clear answer, and it is more modest and more interesting than the bigger claims you sometimes see.

How Much Harder Is It, Really?

An early field study on Nordic walking versus regular walking tested men and women at a self-selected pace and measured oxygen consumption and calorie burn directly. In women, oxygen consumption rose from about 14.9 to 17.9 mL per kg per minute, roughly a 20% increase, with calorie burn climbing from about 4.6 to 5.4 kcal per minute. In men, oxygen consumption rose from about 12.8 to 15.5 mL per kg per minute, around 21% higher, with calories climbing from about 5.7 to 6.9 kcal per minute. Heart rate went up too, but only modestly, and the study found no significant jump in how hard the walk felt to the people doing it. That last part matters: you are doing more physiological work without it feeling proportionally harder.

Why the Poles Change What Your Muscles Are Doing

A more controlled treadmill crossover trial on young men found oxygen uptake about 15.8% higher, minute ventilation about 17% higher, and heart rate about 8.4% higher during Nordic walking than plain walking at matched speed and incline. The mechanism is straightforward: in regular walking, your arms mostly swing along for balance. With poles, you actively push off behind you with each stride, which recruits the triceps, lats, and core rotators in a way passive arm swing never does. That is genuine extra muscle mass doing genuine work, which is why total oxygen demand climbs even though your legs are moving at the same speed and pace as before. Technique matters here: plant the pole at a slight angle behind your foot, drive through to a full arm extension, and keep a relaxed grip so the wrist strap, not a clenched fist, carries the load.

A Tool for Rehab, Not Just a Fitness Trend

Nordic walking’s real-world track record extends beyond healthy adults chasing extra calories. A six-week Nordic walking program studied in people with Parkinson’s disease (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1 through 3) produced measurable improvements in 10-meter walk time, the timed up-and-go test, six-minute walk distance, and quality of life scores, with excellent compliance and no adverse events. Notably, the gains were still present five months later in a subgroup that was retested. The poles provide two extra points of ground contact, which adds stability and confidence for people whose balance or gait is compromised, while still delivering a genuine cardiovascular training stimulus rather than just a supported shuffle.

Getting the Technique Right

Pole length matters more than people expect: a common starting guideline is around 68% to 70% of your height, adjusted so your elbow sits at roughly a 90-degree angle when the pole tip touches the ground beside your foot. Use the diagonal pattern you already do naturally when walking, opposite arm forward with opposite leg, just exaggerated and loaded through the pole. Most of the added benefit comes from actively pushing off through extension, not from leaning on the poles for support, so resist the urge to plant them straight down in front of you like a cane.

What You Can Actually Apply

  • Treat it as an upgrade, not a replacement. If you are already tracking how many steps a day you are taking to lose weight, swapping some of those walks for Nordic walking at the same pace adds meaningful extra energy expenditure without adding impact stress.
  • Use it on easy days. The heart-rate increase is modest enough that Nordic walking fits comfortably inside a Zone 2 cardio session, giving you more output for the same perceived effort rather than pushing you into a harder training zone.
  • Save it for outdoor days. Poles need real ground to plant into, so on days you are stuck indoors on one of the best under-desk walking pads, you will not get the same upper-body engagement — treat the two as complementary tools rather than interchangeable ones.
  • Consider it for stability, not just calories. If balance, joint sensitivity, or a condition like Parkinson’s makes regular walking feel unsteady, the extra ground contact points from poles can make consistent cardio training more accessible.
