What Sarcopenia Actually Is

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function associated with aging. A quantitative review of the research estimates adults lose roughly 3-8% of muscle mass per decade starting around age 30, and that rate accelerates further after age 60. It’s not just about looking less muscular, sarcopenia is directly linked in research to falls, loss of independence, and higher mortality risk in older adults.

Why It Accelerates Rather Than Declining Steadily

Several mechanisms compound as we age rather than acting independently: motor neurons (the nerve cells that activate muscle fibers) are gradually lost, and the muscle fibers they controlled either get taken over by neighboring neurons or simply waste away. Anabolic hormones decline. What Actually Prevents and Slows It

  • Resistance training, consistently.
