In the deep canyons of northern Mexico’s Sierra Tarahumara, a running culture exists that puts most modern endurance training to shame. The Rarámuri, known outside their community as the Tarahumara, run ultramarathon distances of 50 to 100 kilometers as a normal part of life, not as an extreme feat, wearing thin rawhide sandals on some of the roughest terrain on earth. Their story was popularized by the bestseller Born to Run, but actual researchers have studied their running mechanics directly, and what they found is more nuanced than the legend.

Who Are the Tarahumara

The Rarámuri have a documented history of persistence hunting, running down deer and other game over long distances by exploiting an advantage almost no other animal has: the ability to cool by sweating while moving at speed, eventually driving prey into heat exhaustion. Today, the tradition lives on through the rarajipari, an ancestral team race where runners cover 75 kilometers or more while kicking a small wooden ball, and increasingly through organized ultramarathons. Their traditional footwear, the huarache, is a simple piece of rawhide strapped to the foot, a design that archaeological evidence suggests has barely changed in thousands of years.

What the Science Actually Found

A direct biomechanical study of Tarahumara runners, led by Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman, filmed both huarache-wearing and conventionally-shod Tarahumara running and measured exactly how their feet struck the ground. The sandal-wearers showed real variation, 40% mainly landed midfoot, 30% forefoot, and 30% rearfoot, but those running in modern athletic shoes were overwhelmingly rearfoot strikers at 75%. Sandal-wearers also landed with significantly less overstride, meaning the foot touched down closer beneath the knee rather than out in front of it, and had measurably stiffer foot arches than their shoe-wearing counterparts.

The Honest Takeaway

It’s tempting to read this as proof everyone should throw away their running shoes. The study’s own authors explicitly warn against that leap. People who grow up in cushioned, elevated-heel shoes typically have weaker feet and calf muscles that aren’t conditioned for the different loading that a forefoot or midfoot strike demands, and abrupt, uncoached transitions to minimal footwear have been linked to their own injuries in other research. The researchers frame the finding as evidence that traditional footwear and running form carry real biomechanical wisdom worth studying, not as a directive to change your shoes overnight.

What You Can Actually Apply

  • Check your overstride, regardless of footwear. Landing with your foot closer beneath your knee, rather than reaching far out in front, is one of the clearest differences the research found and doesn’t require new shoes to practice.
  • Build foot and calf strength before changing anything about your stride. The stiffer, stronger arches seen in sandal-wearing Tarahumara reflect years of loading, not something you acquire by switching shoes for one run.
  • If you do experiment with minimal footwear, transition gradually. Weeks to months, not days, giving connective tissue time to adapt.
