The best-known research here is a 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine that followed over 2,300 middle-aged Finnish men for a median of nearly 21 years and found that frequent sauna use, four to seven sessions a week, was associated with a substantially lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease compared to once a week. Sauna heat raises heart rate similarly to moderate exercise and improves blood vessel function over repeated sessions, a plausible mechanism behind the association.
Heat Shock Proteins and Cellular Repair
Heat stress triggers the production of heat shock proteins, molecules that help repair damaged proteins inside cells and are linked in research to better long-term cellular resilience. - Hydrate well before and after. You lose meaningful fluid through sweating in a sauna session, replace it before and after, not just during.
- Aim for consistency over intensity. The strongest research on cardiovascular benefit is tied to frequency (several sessions a week) over months and years, not any single long session.
- Avoid alcohol before a session. The combination increases the risk of dehydration and dangerously low blood pressure.
- Check with a doctor if you have a heart condition or are pregnant. Sauna heat is a real cardiovascular stressor, generally safe for healthy adults but worth confirming individually if you have a relevant condition.
