Mood and Alertness

Cold water exposure has been shown to trigger a sharp release of norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter linked to alertness and mood. A large 2016 randomized controlled trial published in PLOS ONE, involving over 3,000 participants doing a 30-90 second cold shower daily for 30 days, found a 29% reduction in self-reported sickness absence from work compared to a control group, though it found no significant difference in actual illness days, likely tied to this alertness response combined with the sense of having voluntarily handled a real physical stressor.

Muscle Recovery: More Nuanced Than It Sounds

Cold water is widely used post-workout, and research does show it can reduce perceived muscle soreness in the short term. But the evidence is genuinely mixed on strength training specifically: some research suggests cold exposure immediately after resistance training may blunt some of the long-term muscle-building adaptations, since inflammation is actually part of how muscle repairs and grows stronger.
