Sauna vs. Steam Room: Is There a Real Difference?
Dry sauna and steam room feel similar but heat you differently, and the strongest cardiovascular research applies mainly to dry sauna, not steam.

Walk into most gyms or spas and you will find both: a dry sauna and a steam room, often side by side, both promising the same rush of heat, sweat, and relaxation. It is easy to assume they are interchangeable, just two flavors of the same hot box. But the mechanics of how each one heats your body are genuinely different, and so is the research backing the health claims attached to them.
The Heat Itself Works Differently
A traditional Finnish-style sauna runs hot and dry, often 80 to 100 degrees Celsius (176 to 212°F), with humidity as low as 10 to 20 percent. A steam room runs much cooler, typically 40 to 50 degrees Celsius (104 to 122°F), but with humidity near 100 percent. That humidity difference is the whole story. In dry heat, sweat evaporates off your skin efficiently, which is your body’s primary cooling valve, so even at a high air temperature your core heats up in a fairly controlled, gradual way. In a steam room, the air is already saturated with water vapor, so your sweat has nowhere to go. It sits on your skin instead of evaporating and pulling heat away. That is why a steam room can feel just as intense, or push your core temperature up just as fast, despite a much lower thermometer reading.
Your Cardiovascular System Responds to Both, But the Evidence Trail Splits
Both dry heat and moist heat make your heart work harder: blood vessels in the skin dilate to shed heat, heart rate climbs, and blood is redirected toward the skin’s surface. Where the story diverges is in the long-term research. The strongest evidence connecting heat exposure to cardiovascular protection, and even reduced long-term mortality, comes from large observational studies on traditional dry sauna use, most famously Finland’s Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease cohort. Nobody has run an equivalent multi-decade study specifically tracking steam room habits and heart disease outcomes. It is plausible that similar cardiovascular loading in a steam room produces some overlapping benefit, but plausible is not the same as proven, and right now it is an assumption rather than a finding.
The Real Point of Difference Is Your Airways
This is where steam rooms and dry saunas genuinely diverge, and where dedicated research does exist on the wet-heat side specifically. Warm, humid air is generally easier on airways than cold, dry air, and moist heat is often used to soothe congestion or irritated sinuses. But moist heat is not automatically gentle. A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that hyperventilating hot, humid air triggered significant airway narrowing in people with asthma, mediated through a cholinergic nerve reflex, and it also produced coughing that cold, dry air did not (Hayes et al., 2012). Separately, a Cochrane systematic review of heated, humidified air for common cold symptoms concluded that existing trials do not show a consistent, reliable benefit (Singh et al., 2017). In plain terms: if you have asthma or a reactive airway condition, a steam room is not a guaranteed soothing experience, and if you are stepping into one hoping to shorten a cold, the evidence for that specific use is thinner than the marketing suggests.
Why the Steam Room Does Not Get the Same Research Treatment
Part of the imbalance is practical. A steam room is harder to standardize for research: humidity levels, ventilation, and how much steam actually contacts skin versus airways vary a lot more from one facility to another than a dry sauna’s temperature dial. Dry sauna culture in Finland also comes with decades of near-universal, disciplined use, exactly the kind of population that produces a clean, long-running cohort study. None of that means a steam room is bad for you. It means the burden of proof, right now, sits mostly on one side of this comparison, and honest use should reflect that.
What You Can Actually Apply
